Joseph T. Ryczaj, 86, died the evening of Aug 8, 2008 in the Overlook Medical Center, New Wilmington. Joseph was formerly of 1433 W. Division Street.
Born November 11, 1921, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Jarosz Ryczaj. He was married to the former Irene L. Adamczyk for 57 years, she survives.
Joseph worked as an Assembly Erector at the Mesta Machine Co. for 7 years and retired from Wean United Engineering in Youngstown, Ohio after 30 years of service. He was a member of the the K. Pulaski Club, SNPJ, and Polish Falcons Clubs in New Castle. Joe loved spending time with his grandchildren, going dancing and traveling with his wife, and he enjoyed gardening at home.
Mr. Ryczaj was a Roman Catholic and a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish.
Joseph was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from July 8, 1942 to January 3, 1946, as a Tec Sargent in the 162 nd Ordnance Maintenance Co. He was an Automotive Mechanic, serving in New Guinea, South Philippines Liberation, and Luzon. Joe received the following citations; Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Br Service Stars, Philippine Liberation with 1 Br Service Star, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal for his efforts.
In addition to his wife, survivors include, a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robert E. Vannatten of New Castle; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Janet Ryczaj of Roseville, Ca.; two sisters, Adeline Leckwart of New Castle, and Sophie Bardash of Bonita Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren, Nick, Josh, Ryan, and Jonathan Vannatten of New Castle, and Joseph A. Ryczaj of Roseville, Ca.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward, John and William Ryczaj; and a sister, Stella Sharo.
Visitation was held on Sunday, Aug 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St.
A Mass of Christian burial was held this afternoon at 1:00 p.m., at St. Mary's Church, Mary Mother of Hope Parish by Rev. Victor Molka, Pastor. The committal service and burial along with the New Castle Area Honor Guard Military Rites where conducted at St. Philip & James Cemetery following mass.
