Albert J. Duda, 82 of 2709 Old Plank Rd., New Castle, died the morning of August 18, 2008 at the Jameson Care Center, Wilmington Rd.
Born November 20, 1925, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Joseph and Suzanna Klamer Duda. He married the former Pauline Davis, they were married for 27 years, she preceded him in death in 1976.
Albert was a Roman Catholic and very proud of his Slovak Nationality.
Albert was a Mechanical Engineer with the U.S. Steel Corporation, and was named Chief Engineer while working at U.S. Steel, he retired after 28 years of service.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, WWII, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater and Aleutian Islands off Alaska. He held the rank of Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class, he served on the following vessels and stations; NTS, Sampson, N.Y., NAS, Livermore, Calif., HEDRON FAW-4. Albert received the Point System, Victory Medal, American Campaign, and Asiatic Pacific Medals.
Al was an alumni of Youngstown State University, a member of the American Legion Post #343, the V.F.W. Post #315, the Professional Engineers Association, he was licensed in Penna and Ohio Registered Engineers, the American Bowling Congress and the Slovak Club in New Castle.
Albert was a very active member of the Slovak Club Bowling League, he was secretary and treasure for the league since 1946. Albert was an avid bowler and the highlight of his bowling career came at Colonial Lanes during a SBC Bowling Tournament on April 24, 2005, he bowled a 299 game. One of the alley workers ran down the lane to grab the last pin to give it to him. Albert said "the dear Lord must not be ready for him yet... since he left one pin standing." The pin has a place of honor at the Slovak Club. He ran the Slovak Bowling League for nearly 50 years, keeping the records for the bowlers and teams, by hand and using a typewriter. The League honored Albert earlier this years at the season-ending banquet.
He was an avid fisherman, taking a twice yearly trips to Canada with his friends for walleye fishing. He also golfed and played horseshoes weekly. Albert was a generous man, always able to help out or give to someone in need.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Damian J. Duda of New York, N.Y., Matthew A. and Deborah Duda of Sherman Oaks, Calif; two daughters and son-in-law, M.S. Bibiana M. Duda of New Castle, and M.S. Daria P. Duda and husband Scott Morrison of Swarthmore, PA.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy and John Dzemyan of New Castle; two grandchildren, Lana Duda of Swarthmore, PA., and Natalie Duda of Sherman Oaks, Calif.
In addition to his parents and wife, Pauline, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Michael, Steve, and John Duda; four sisters, Susan Elder, Pauline Canupp, Mary Pagley and Helen Leibig.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Aug 20, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St, New Castle.
A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Thursday, August 21, 10:00 a.m., at St. Camillus Church. Procession will leave for mass at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home. The Very Rev. Philip Farrell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites at the cemetery following the committal service.
