Edward S. Mitchell Sr., 86, of 418 Waldo St., New Castle, died the morning of July 18, 2010, in Haven Nursing Home.
Born May 1, 1924, in New Castle. Edward was the son of the late Stephen and Anna Ufnar Mitchell. He was married to the former Rose Marie Abraham for 62 years. She survives.
Edward was Catholic and a member of St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church. He worked for Keystone Lawrence Trucking Co., as a truck driver for 10 years.
He enjoyed going fishing, especially in Canada with friends and family. Mr. Mitchell was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He was honorably discharged from the service on January 9, 1946. Edward was inducted on October 28, 1943 and served as a Private First Class with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division.
Edward served in New Guinea, Northern Solomons, Southern Philippines Liberation and Luzon. He received the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Silver Star Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars.
In addition to his wife, Rose Marie Mitchell, he is survived by a son, Edward S. Mitchell Jr., of New Castle; a sister, Irene Vanus, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; two grandchildren, Stephen Mitchell and his wife, Jill, of Rochester, Minn and April Calton and her husband, Scott, of Beaver, PA; and one great-granddaughter, Avery Calton, of Beaver, PA.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Agnes Panella and a brother, William Mitchell.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Noga Funeral Home, Inc., 1142 S. Mill St.
A procession will leave the funeral home Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m., for St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Charbel Aldaccache of St. John the Baptist will officiate.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct a Military service at St. Vitus Cemetery prior to the committal and internment.
