GySGT, Edward L. Rowell, USMC Ret., 86, of 40 High Street, New Castle, died the evening of August 31, 2008, in the Hospitality Care Center, 3726 East State St., Hermitage.
Born November 11, 1921 in Glens Falls, New York, to the late Roscoe E. and Gertrude M. Hermance Rowell Sr.. Edward was married for 63 years to the former Eleanor M. Light, she survives him in death.
Edward worked as an Aquatics Instructor for the Y.M.C.A. in New Castle for 32 years. He worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. as the stockroom manager for 20 years and he retired from the United States Marine Corp after 22 years of service. Edward was a Korean War Veteran, inducted December 22, 1947, discharged October 4, 1968. He held the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and was a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C.. Ed received the following medals; Good Conduct, WW II Victory, Korean Service, Accomendation, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Pistol and Rifle Badges.
Edward served as an instructor for the American Red Cross, training individuals in first aid, CPR, life guard training, and SCUBA diving for over 54 years. He was a member of the Red Cross Disaster Team and a life member of the N.R.A..
Edward belonged to the American Legion Post #343, V.F.W. Post #315, and the Marine Corps League in New Castle.
In addition to his wife Eleanor, he is survived by a two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert E. Rowell of Bremerton, Washington, Gary D. and Linda Rowell of Yuma, AZ.; two daughters and son-in-laws Lisa M. and Gregg Sanford of Farrell, PA, and Susan M. and Christopher Dunagan of Bremerton, Washington; a brother and sister-in-law Donald L. and Irene Rowell of Glens Falls, NY; a sister and brother-in-law Barbara A. and John Tremblay of Queenbury, NY.; twenty Grandchildren and thirty Great-Grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William O. and Roscoe E. Rowell Jr.
Viewing for family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at the Noga Funeral Home, Inc., 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle.
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening following the visitation. The Rev. Emmett W. Shaffer will officiate.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites after the service.
Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the American Red Cross.
