Harley Edwin Altman , 85

Harley Edwin Altman, 85, of New Castle passed away the afternoon of April 30, 2017, with his family at his side.

Harley was born in New Castle on September 3, 1931. He was the son of the late Carl McKinley and Jennie Elizabeth Houston Altman. Mr. Altman was married to the former Eleanor Jean Morris. She preceded him in death on August 25, 1980. They were married for 30 years. Harley was of the Protestant faith. He was a graduate of New Castle High School, class of 1949.

Following graduation, Harley enlisted in the United States Air Force on January 2, 1951 in Pittsburgh, PA. He earned the rank of Airman First class and served his country during the Korean War. Harley received the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Altman was Honorably Discharged on October 31, 1953 at Travis Air Force Base in California. Harley worked as a school bus driver for New Wilmington School District for 10 years. He retired after 33 years of service as a delivery driver for Nichols Bakery and Four Star Pizza. Harley was a baseball coach for 28 years locally and out of town in New York and Ohio. He also enjoyed playing cards, and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. His enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Mr. Altman is survived by two sons, Russell E. Altman of New Wilmington; Gary E. (Kimberly) Altman of Vancouver, WA.; daughter, Nancy L. Dure of Ellwood City; four brothers, Orville L. (Mary Ann) Altman, of Dayton, OH, Gerald L. (Susan) Altman of New Castle, Homer D. Altman of Clarksville, TN, Wendell P. Altman of Springfield, MO; two sisters, Luella Carbone of New Castle and Roberta Crum of Lowellville, OH; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; and his companion, Arlene B. Ross of New Castle.

In addition to his wife Eleanor and parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Randall, and Gail Ann Altman, four brothers Lester, Wilber, Mendell, and Howard Altman; three sisters, Audrey Occhibone, Louise Lombardo, and Loretta Llewellyn.

Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill Street, New Castle. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct full military honors at 7:45 p.m. in the Funeral Home.

A Funeral service will be celebrated at 8 p.m. following visitation at the funeral home. Pastor Gary Arnold will officiate. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery.
