Obituary

Eugene Sharek, 75, of Harlansburg Road passed away the evening of January 30, 2023 in his residence.

Eugene was born September 10, 1947 in New Castle. He was the son of the late Walter and Stella (Kuczka) Sharek. Eugene was married to the former Grayce D. Gruca. They were married in 1972 and spent 50 years together. Mr. Sharek was of the Catholic faith. Eugene graduated from Laurel High School, class of 1965.

Mr. Sharek continued his education by attending Butler County Community College. Eugene was drafted in the United States Army on November 15, 1966 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Eugene was a member of the 4th Service Battalion 39th Artillery Unit.  Mr. Sharek served his country during the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of Specialist 4 on February 17, 1968. Eugene received many decorations and citations, among them where the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Sharek was transferred to the United States Army Reserves and Honorably Discharged on November 14, 1968. Eugene retired after 11 years of service as a machine operator at the former Rockwell International Corporation Spring Division. He enjoyed listening to the Beach Boys, attending their concerts and singing his favorite tunes. Mr. Sharek enjoyed classic cars, drag racing and he was all the way Chevrolet. Eugene enjoyed traveling with his wife in their RV across America. He also loved to target practice. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Grayce, Eugene is survived by two daughters Stephanie E. (Art) Johanson of Warwick, PA and Shelly A. (Kurt) Stillwagon of Manheim, PA; son, Steven E. (Nina) Sharek of Whiteford, MD; and sister, Loretta (Edward) Kacznarczyk of New Castle; four grandchildren, Lila, Elin, Adeline, and Hank; four step-grandchildren, Amber, Jeremy, Travis, and Corey.

Mr. Sharek is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Walter Sharek, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 Mill Street, New Castle. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full Military Honors for Mr. Sharek at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

A Blessing Service will be celebrated immediately following the Honor Guard in the funeral home. Seminarian Dan Roberts of Holy Spirit Parish will officiate. Burial will be in S.S.
