Nicholas Horney, 98, of New Castle, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 30, 2022, with family by his side. Nick was born on February 6, 1924, in New Castle, PA to the late Gregory and Mary Pesovich Horney. Nick is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, the late Virginia Binder Horney. Nick was a graduate of Shenango High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1943, and served his country onboard the Liberty Ship during D-Day in 1944, before his discharge in 1946.
After serving in the Navy, Nick graduated from California State Teachers College. Mr. Horney, as so many dearly called him, was a lifelong teacher, teaching electricity and mechanical drawing at Struthers High School and Pennsylvania State University. While at Struthers, Nick also founded the WKTL radio station.
He and his wife Virginia owned and operated May Lyns Dairy Store, proudly named after their two daughters, for 12 years. Nick was a long time member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in New Castle and also frequently attended St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church of Campbell, Ohio. In addition to teaching, Nick had many favorite pastimes and was very social, often dancing with his wife and lifelong friends at the SNPJ, Elks, Eagles, and Croatian clubs. Nick enjoyed playing golf, bocce, and cards, and collecting records and coins. He also enjoyed the occasional vodka - a true Russian at heart. His greatest joy in life was his cherished granddaughter, Mia, whom he was so very proud of. One of his most beloved roles over the years was being Santa during the Christmas season and personifying the spirit of the holidays with a special twinkle in his eyes.
Nick is survived by his two loving daughters and sons-in-law, Maryett A. (Martin) Clobus of New Castle and Kay Lyn (Russell) Case of Pittsburgh; his beloved granddaughter Mia Nicole Case and fiancé Adam Votta; and his many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle. A Funeral Ceremony will be held on Wednesday at 11 A.M. at the Funeral Home. Father Chris Davis will officiate. Burial with military honors will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens
