Richard A. Cooper Sr., 77, of New Castle passed away the morning of October 20, 2022 at UPMC Jameson Hospital.
Richard was born September 12, 1945 in Ellwood City. He was the son of the late Franklin James and Etta Marie (Styers) Cooper. Richard was married to the former Julie A. Ignatz. They were married for 54 years. She survives at home. He was a graduate of Mohawk High School, class of 1965.
Following graduation, Richard enlisted in the United States Army on July 26, 1965 in Pittsburgh, PA. Richard served his country during the Vietnam War. Mr. Cooper earned the rank of SP4 / E-4 on April 20, 1967. Richard earned many decorations and citations, among them where National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, (2) Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Sharpshooter (rifle). Mr. Cooper was Honorably Discharged on July 25, 1971 in Pittsburgh. Mr. Cooper worked for several local companies; some of those were Portola Packaging, former Rockwell Spring Works, and Hovis Auto parts. He retired after 10 years of service as a mail handler at the United States Postal Service. Richard will be remembered as a good person. Mr. Cooper enjoyed going hunting and fishing (especially at Moraine State Park). He was a former member of the Shenango Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Julie, Richard is survived by his son, Richard A. (Shannon) Cooper Jr. of New Castle; and two grandchildren, Blaine Hoffman and Logan Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, David Cooper, Charles Cooper, and Robert Cooper.
Following in his wishes, there are no calling hours or services scheduled at this time. A Celebration of Life Service will be held by the family at a later date. Local arrangements were entrusted to Noga Funeral Home, Inc. 1142 Mill Street.
