Robert Bonk Obituary

Robert S. Bonk, 82 of Saint John XXIII nursing home in Hermitage PA passed away January 15, 2022 at Sharon Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Robert was born in New Castle, PA on April 1st, 1939 to the late Stanley and Wanda Buyny Bonk.  Bob was a graduate of New Castle High School in 1957.  He was married for 58 years to Rebecca (Barnes) Bonk.  She survives at home.  He was preceded in death by both his parents, and a younger brother Richard.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his daughters Brenda (Michael) Polanichka of Simi Valley, CA and Bonnie Bonk of Seven Fields, PA along with grandchildren Jordan (Paul) Zdinak and Taylor Polanichka, and nephews Justin and Matthew Bonk.

He was a devoted husband and loving father.  Robert was of the Catholic faith, and he attended Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church in New Castle. He enjoyed being a church trustee and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

He was drafted in 1961 to the US Army during the Berlin Crisis. He served two years active duty and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, in the 1st Armored Division 52nd Infantry Regiment. He was deployed to Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Mr. Bonk worked at Republic Steel for 30 years in metallography. He attended Youngstown State University, where he studied Engineering. After he retired, he also worked at several car dealerships as a salesman.

He loved running at Pearson Park and the outdoors.  He owned an 84’ red Corvette and enjoyed walking the car shows, especially on Father’s Day.  He enjoyed going to Southern California to visit family.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Wednesday 10 to 11 a.m.   at the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 Mill Street, New Castle. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Honors at 10:45 a.m. in the funeral home.

A Blessing Service will immediately follow the Honor Guard Service in the Funeral Home. Msgr. John A. Rencewicz, II of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Castleview Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3695 Boardman Canfield Rd, Canfield, OH 44406 in his honor.
