Walter Joseph Monstwil, 90, of 506 Mt. Pleasant Street, New Castle passed away the afternoon of March 18, 2024 at UPMC Avalon Place.
Walter was born May 10, 1933 in New Castle. He was the son of the late Anthony and Jennie (Kusnierz) Monstwil. Walter was married on May 5, 1956 to the former Patricia Jaworski. She survives at home. They were married for 67 years. Mr. Monstwil was Roman Catholic and a member of Holy Spirit Parish-Mary, Mother of Hope site. Walter was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1950.
Following graduation, Walter enlisted in the United States Army on July 19, 1956 in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Monstwil earned the rank of Specialist Third Class, with G2 Intelligence while stationed on Governors Island, NY. He was Honorably Discharged on July 18, 1958. Walter worked at the former Strauss Company installing carpeting. He later purchased M&M Floor Covering in New Castle where he was owner and operator for the past 52 years working alongside his wife and sons. Walter was a member of the former Madonna Church and a part of its church council. Walter sang in the men’s choir, was an usher, a member of St. Vincent De Paul Society, and Kasimir Pulaski Club. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Patricia, he is survived by three sons, Michael J. (April) Monstwil of New Castle, Mark A. (Lynn) Monstwil of Westerville, OH, and Walter F. (Megan) Monstwil of New Castle; five grandchildren, Audrey, Patrick, Noah, Luisa, and Alina; three sisters, Frances Spalvieri of Copley, OH, Jane (John) Fishovitz of New Castle, and Mary Olsen of Columbus, OH.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alexander Monstwil.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 Mill Street, New Castle, PA. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full military honors for Walter in the funeral home at 6:30 p.m.
A procession will leave the funeral home Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. for Holy Spirit Parish-Mary, Mother of Hope site, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Aaron Kriss parochial vicar will officiate. Burial will be in Madonna Cemetery.
